Happy Monday!
The other day, I was talking to one of my friends about New Year’s resolutions. When I asked him what his were he said, “Not many New Year’s resolutions. The key is to have low expectations I guess, the disappointment will be lower.” My heart sunk.
What’s your approach? Do you set New Year’s resolutions? Do you set intentions? Do you set goals? Do just you not bother because what’s the point in bringing on more disappointment because you haven’t achieved the ambitions you set for yourself in previous years?
Today i.e. the third Monday of January is now labelled as Blue Monday – the most depressing day of the year because the post-festive season blues have kicked in, we are failing at our New Year’s resolutions already, our motivation levels are low and debt levels are high.
But I’m not writing this blog to make your day (more) depressing. I’m writing it to share with you a way that has worked really well for me over the past couple of years.
You see, I personally don’t like New Year’s resolutions. Typically, these are big, bold statements, often unrealistic or too drastic from your current lifestyle. And if you come to the end of the year and you look at the list and you haven’t achieved most of the things that you set yourself at the start of the year, it’s likely that you will feel down as a result. I get that. I would feel down, too.
Sometimes we don’t achieve everything we set out to achieve…and that’s fine because sometimes things change in our life and we get to accomplish other things that are more relevant. This is where New Year’s resolutions fail because they don’t take into account the things that we have actually achieved.
So, I want to share with you a different approach that will help you celebrate what you have achieved in 2017 and set yourself up for an exciting and fulfilling 2018!
I did this exercise for the first time last year. So, on the 4th January this year when I was flying back to the UK and I reviewed my 2017, it was fantastic to see the growth and achievements I’ve experienced over the past year. And I’m super excited about how I will continue to evolve in the year ahead!
I want for you to experience the same. To get you started, I’m sharing with you a simple tool to help you review 2017 and celebrate your learnings and achievements, and then plan for an exciting, fulfilling and enriched 2018.
This exercise will help you to connect with what you really want from your life, what really inspires and excites you, and the positive difference you can make. That way you can make your aspirations for this year more than just a tick-box exercise!
You can also watch the Facebook Live I did on it last week.
