Do you tend to overcomplicate things for yourself? Are you constantly seeking that elusive perfection? Do you find yourself overthinking so much that your head starts spinning?
Frankly, every now and then, I get badly entangled in the cobweb of overthinking, overcomplicating and seeking perfection. It gets me so wrapped up that it keeps me stuck, spinning my wheels in one place. Ultimately, it prevents me from enjoying what truly matters to me.
Can you relate? Does this happen to you, too?
After six days off completely missing the Black Friday tornado, I returned to work yesterday expecting to be full of excitement but instead, I found myself digging a deep burrow trying to come up with the perfect irresistible solution.
By the mid-afternoon, I was feeling down instead of uplifted.
To short-circuit this downward-spiralling feeling, I decided to stop trying to figure out this particular solution and do something else that would make me feel like I’ve achieved something and end the day on a positive note.
It worked.
But deep down, I knew the challenge remained.
Enough is enough.
It’s time to let go of overthinking, overcomplicating and seeking perfection.
Since this is not the first time that I’ve come across this bridge, I know that I’m on a journey and may well find myself here again.
The great news is every time I circle back, I’m equipped with a better and more detailed map to find the path that’s right for me. Today, I want to share with you some of those pointers so you can do this, too.
If you’ve been hanging around me for a while, you will know that I’m constantly seeking efficiency and simplicity.
I’m always on the lookout for how things could be done more effectively, quicker, simpler and with more ease.
Two sides of the same coin.
In my search for simplicity, I overcomplicate. Haha…
If you’re also finding yourself entangled in the cobwebs of overthinking, overcomplicating and striving for perfection, read on and as you may find the below practice helpful, too.
Last night in between brushing my teeth, staring at the sky trying to spot the Full Moon in between the fast-moving clouds and putting on my pyjamas, I rushed to my desk, tore a piece of paper and scribbled down quickly:
“30 November 2020
This Full Moon, I release:
Overthinking, overcomplicating, trying to be perfect, not feeling good enough, wanting to get it right first time…”
Z rutter
For the first time on a Full Moon, I decided to do a burning ritual. So I went to the garden to find where to burn the piece of paper… but something rustled the leaves in the dark and it freaked me out so I rushed back inside.
I carefully folded the piece of paper, put it into a brown ceramic bowl and brushed the matchstick a couple of times against the box until it lit up and set the paper on fire.
The gusts of wind from the wide-open windows flared up the flames. As they crinkled the paper into ashes, I waved goodbye to what had been holding me back.
The house and my freshly washed hair stank of smoke. Grrr…
It wasn’t the best idea to do this indoors, after all.
But it was done. Done is better than perfect, right?
We learn best by doing not overthinking. I’ll have a better strategy next time.
This morning, I woke up feeling lighter and more excited about the day and the week ahead.
Walking along the River Thames at 7:30 this morning, I marvelled for a few more moments at the beautiful Full Moon. It was hanging just above the skyscrapers in the City of London. Half an hour later, when walking back home the Full Moon had disappeared behind the tall City buildings and the sky was an uplifting bright blue.
Before starting work, I asked myself “What can I achieve today that will make me feel proud?”
One of the things on that list was to share with you about this powerful ritual of the letting go of what doesn’t serve you.
For me, coincidentally, this is the perfect timing not just because of the Full Moon but more importantly because it’s the end of the luteal and the verge of the menstrual phase of my cycle. The latter is a potent time for reflection and letting go.
